ATLASGAL — Environments of 6.7 GHz methanol masers

چکیده
Using the 870-μm APEX Telescope Large Area Survey of the Galaxy (ATLASGAL), we have identified 577 submillimetre continuum sources with masers from the methanol multibeam (MMB) survey in the region 280 < l < 20; | b | < 1.5. 94 per cent of methanol masers in the region are associated with sub-millimetre dust emission. We estimate masses for ∼450 maser-associated sources and find that methanol masers are preferentially associated with massive clumps. These clumps are centrally condensed, with envelope structures that appear to be scale-free, the mean maser position being offset from the peak column density by 0 ± 4. Assuming a Kroupa initial mass function and a star-formation efficiency of ∼30 per cent, we find that over two thirds of the clumps are likely to form clusters with masses >20 M⊙. Furthermore, almost all clumps satisfy the empirical mass-size criterion for massive star formation. Bolometric luminosities taken from the literature for ∼100 clumps range between ∼100 and 106 L⊙. This confirms the link between methanol masers and massive young stars for 90 per cent of our sample. The Galactic distribution of sources suggests that the starformation efficiency is significantly reduced in the Galactic-centre region, compared to the rest of the survey area, where it is broadly constant, and shows a significant drop in the massive star-formation rate density in the outer Galaxy. We find no enhancement in source counts towards the southern Scutum-Centaurus arm tangent at l ∼ 315, which suggests that this arm is not actively forming stars.

Polarization properties of 6.7 GHz methanol masers in NGC6334F
The Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) has been used to make the first full polarization observations of 6.7 GHz methanol masers. Linear polarization was detected towards all four sources observed, at levels between a few and 10%, while none of the sources show circular polarization stronger than approximately 1.5%. Linear polarization appears to be more common in the 6.7 GHz methanol mas...
متن کاملA GLIMPSE-based search for 6.7-GHz Methanol Masers and the lifetime of their spectral features
The University of Tasmania Mt Pleasant 26-m and Ceduna 30-m radio telescopes have been used to search for 6.7-GHz class II methanol masers towards two hundred GLIMPSE sources. The target regions were selected on the basis of their mid-infrared colours as being likely to be young high-mass star formation regions and are either bright at 8.0 μm, or have extreme [3.6]-[4.5] colour. Methanol masers...
متن کاملA Search for 6.7 Ghz Methanol Masers in Oh Megamaser Galaxies
We report the results of a search for 6.7 GHz methanol (CH3OH) maser emission in OH megamaser galaxies at 0.11 < z < 0.27. No detections were made in the 25 objects observed down to rms noise levels of roughly 0.6 mJy in 150 kHz channels. The OH megamaser sample includes OH emission of all observed types: narrow and broad, physically compact and extended, variable and quiescent, and from simple...
متن کاملContinuum emission associated with 6.7-GHz methanol masers
We have used the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) to search for continuum emission toward three strong 6.7-GHz methanol maser sources. For two of the sources, G339.88-1.26 and NGC 6334F (G351.42+0.64), we detect continuum emission closely associated with the methanol masers. A further three clusters of masers showed no radio continuum emission above our sensitivity limit of 1-5 mJy. We ...
متن کاملThe 6.7-GHz and 25-GHz methanol masers in OMC-1
The Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) has been used to search for methanol maser emission at 6.7 GHz towards OMC-1. Two features peaking at 7.2 km s and −1.1 km s have been detected. The former has at least two components close in both velocity and position. It is located south-east of the Orion Kleinmann-Low (Orion-KL) nebula in the region of outflow traced by the 25-GHz methanol masers...
